Legalising MMA Competitions

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has become big business in USA. In fact, it has now rivalled the professional sports of boxing and the entertainment sports of wrestling as multi-million dollar industries in USA.
How is MMA different from boxing and wrestling? Basically, MMA is a combination of many different martial arts styles (both sports and combat arts), hence it’s name. It combines a wide variety of different combat styles but now mainly consists of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Amateur Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, Judo, Karate, Kickboxing and Muay Thai. Hence, it allows for both striking and grappling techniques, whether standing or on the ground during the fights.
Recently, the value of MMA as a business has further increased when it finally succeeded in its campaign to get the State of Connecticut to approve the staging of MMA matches. Connecticut is now the 49th state to pass a law making MMA fights legal and the only place left in the USA where MMA matches are still illegal remains the State of New York.
This historic event happened sometime in July 2013 when Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed into law a bill that will lift the State’s ban on MMA starting October 1st, 2013. It was such a triumph for the MMA industry that even House Speaker Brendan Sharkey sent a congratulation note to fans of MMA in the State via his Twitter account saying that the new law “will be good for the economy too.”
Another important development which will further boost the development of the MMA industry in Connecticut is another piece of legislation that was authored by Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla. This law will regulate popular children’s martial arts competitions known as pankration, which is the children’s version of MMA. Having the State Sports Commission oversee the conduct of pankration will ensure that it can serve as a fully regulated conduit for future MMA champions, which augurs well for the development of the industry.
Hence, this is an opportune time to invest some time and effort to learn the basics of MMA, either as a hobby or past-time as a means of keeping fit or healthy or maybe even with a financial motive of eventually making it into a career move.
